Oral cancer-the facts.

Oral cancer-the facts.
February 22, 2018 Angela Kearney

Did you know that oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide?

In Ireland there are approximately 450 cases of oral and pharyngeal (throat) cancers per year with approximately 150 deaths.

Oral cancer is a largely preventable disease.

Smoking and alcohol consumption are associated with 75 to 90% of all cases. Both are risk factors on their own but if both are taken together the risk is significantly increased.

Viruses such as HPV, EBV and HIV are also risk factors.
